Professor Peter M. Haas, who joined the Department of Political Science in September 1986, is retiring after 35.5 years on the faculty. He is known globally for his work on questions of global environmental governance and the politics of bringing scientific expertise to bear in multilateral negotiations. His pioneering work in these areas was recognized by the International Studies Association's Environmental Studies Section in 2014 with its Distinguished Scholar Award. He has taught undergraduate courses on world politics, international political economy, and graduate courses on international environmental politics and globalization and governance; and graduate courses on logic of political inquiry, international relations theory, governance and world order, international political economy, and globalization and international environmental politics. He is the series editor for the MIT Press book series on Politics, Science, and the Environment, and a member of the editorial board of Global Environmental Politics. In the course of his career he has also been a Visiting Scholar at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, a Distinguished Guest Professor at Keio University in Japan, the Karl W. Deutsch Visiting Professor at the Wissenschaftszentrum in Berlin, a Visiting Research Professor at the Watson Institute of brown University, and a Visiting Professor at Nuffield College, Oxford University. He was the lead author of the UN Environmental Programme's GEO5 Report, and also provided expert advice to multiple US government agencies, the Nippon Foundation, the UN Commission on Global Governance, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The Department will organize an event in honor of Peter's retirement in the spring, the state of the Covid pandemic allowing.
