Roger Lau, a 2000 graduate of the UMass Amherst Department of Political Science, has been hired to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) leadership team. Lau managed Senator Elizabeth Warren’s 2020 democratic presidential campaign.
“The Democratic Party is stronger today thanks to the thousands of campaign staffers that [Roger Lau] has hired, trained, and mentored,” Senator Warren said in a tweet about Lau’s hiring. “Now he’ll get to keep on building that powerful branch. He is truly a good man, and I will always be grateful for our enduring partnership.”
A native of Queens, NY Lau majored in political science and Chinese at UMass Amherst after receiving his GED. As an undergraduate, Lau interned for then-Senator John Kerry and was subsequently hired as a staff member. As a staffer Lau gained experience working for Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign, “as well as for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign,” wrote the Boston Globe. “Lau has managed several Senate and House campaigns in New England, and also served in the Commerce Department during the Obama Administration.”
Lau also worked stints as campaign manager for former Massachusetts Congresswoman Niki Tsongas’ 2007 House campaign and worked in the Obama administration as the director of protocol for the Commerce Department in 2009. He served as Warren’s political director in 2011 and as her state director from 2013 to 2017.
“Roger is a consummate campaign professional. He’s the kind of person you always want to have standing next to you in a crisis,” said [1] Anne Caprara, former Priorities USA executive director who worked with Lau on Warren’s 2012 Senate campaign. “He’s about as well respected among campaign operatives as they come and the sort of boss that keeps young staffers inspired and energized.”
Lau will serve as the DNC’s deputy executive director. His hire was announced alongside Alana Mounce, political director; Monica Guardiola, chief operations officer; Clay Middleton, senior advisor to the chair; Jose Nunez, deputy CMO, Organizing; Patrice Taylor, senior advisor; and Lauren Williams; deputy CMO, Grassroots Organizing.
