George T. Sulzner, professor emeritus of political science, has received the 2011 Donner Medal in Canadian Studies.
The Donner Medal is presented biennially by the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) for distinguished achievement, scholarship, and program innovation in the area of Canadian Studies in the United States. The recipient is selected by a committee of the members of ACSUS after a public nomination process.
The award itself is made possible through the interest and support of the William H. Donner Foundation of New York City. In 1975, the Donner Foundation made a grant to ACSUS to fund the designing and striking of several medals known now as "The Donner Medal in Canadian Studies."
Prior to his retirement in 2006, Professor Sulzner taught a wide range of courses in American government and politics, public administration, and Canadian government and politics for more than forty years. His main research areas were public sector labor relations and public management in the US and Canada.
For the past twenty-seven years, Professor Sulzner has been an active labor relations arbitrator for the US Postal Service and the American Postal Workers Union. And, in 2009, he was one of twenty individuals to receive a 20/20 Vision Award from ACSUS in recognition of extraordinary vision and distinguished performance.
In addition, Professor Sulzner has held leadership positions at several notable Canadian studies organizations. From 1985-1987, he was Director of the Five College Consortium in Canadian Studies; from 1993-1997, he was Councilor of ACSUS; From 1994-1998, he was President of the Middle Atlantic and New England Council for Canadian Studies; from 2001-2005, he was Vice President and President of ACSUS; and from 2005-2007, he was President of ACSUS.
Professor Sulzner was awarded the Donner Medal at the 40th Anniversary Gala of the ACSUS on November 17, 2011. He also presented "Administrative Malady: The Implementation of Canada's Public Servants Disclosure Protection Act" at the 21st Biennial Conference of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States, which coincided with the award ceremony.
