Body:
Professor Jillian Schwedler, co-edited with Laleh Khalili, senior lecturer in Middle East politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, recently published a new book Policing and Prisons in the Middle East: Formations of Coercion. The book examines the increase in coercive power in the Middle East, widespread torture and implementation of spectacular punishments. This previously unexamined territory within the Middle East is wrought with challenges ranging from colonial legacies to dissident politics. In addition, unclear relationships and connections between the military, the police and citizens play a key role in the application of policing and imprisonment.
