Biographical Sketch:

Rebecca received a B.S. in Biology from Binghamton University in New York in 2000. While studying for her undergraduate degree she became interested in social movements and was looking for ways to connect her studies to the "green" movement.  After completing her degree, Rebecca left the country to spend a year in Italy with "Willing Workers on Organic Farms" where she learned about local agriculture and organic farming techniques.

Upon returning from her year abroad, Rebecca moved to Pioneer Valley and worked with the citizens' lobby group Clean Water Action.  There, Rebecca was able to match her concern for the environment  with her passion for citizen activism. She spent four years with the organization as a policy advocate and community organizer.

Rebecca's experiences with door-to-door political campaigns and what she believed to be slow responses from government prompted her to get involved more directly in politics and run for local political office in Holyoke, MA in 2005. There she is currently serving her sixth term as a Holyoke City Councilor at Large.

Rebecca is a doctoral candidate in Political Science. Her interests lie mainly with the ways that race and ethnicity play out out to impact issues of political participation and representation. Rebecca believes that her elected position allows her to gain perspective and insight into political behavior that may otherwise go unobserved.
