My major areas of scholarly interest are political representation, voting rights policy, economic inequality, and political behavior. My first book, on the development of federal education policy - An Education in Politics: The Origin and Development of No Child Left Behind - was published with Cornell University Press in 2012. My second book, Ballot Blocked: The Political Erosion of the Voting Rights Act, was published by Stanford University Press in 2017. My third book, Hometown Inequality: Race, Class, and Representation in America's Local Governments, came out in 2020. I have also published articles in the Journal of Politics, Political Communication, Public Opinion Quarterly, Political Research Quarterly, the Quarterly Journal of Political Science, Perspectives on Politics, Political Behavior, Party Politics, Presidential Studies Quarterly, Research and Politics, American Politics Research, the Journal of Race, Ethnicity, and Politics, Polity, and other journals. My research has received support from the National Science Foundation and the Spencer Foundation
