Paul Collins brings an educated eye to the nomination process

As the country waits to see how and when the process to fill Antonin Scalia’s seat on the U.S. Supreme Court will play out, Paul M. Collins Jr., associate professor and director of the Legal Studies Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will be watching with deep historical perspective and insight.

The Institute for Social Science Research has selected Professor Libby Sharrow as one of only seven scholars for 2016 - 2017. As a select member of this program, Professor Sharrow will serve to strengthen existing social science infrastructure on campus in order to stimulation high-quality scholarship and interdisciplinary collaboration. 

On March 8th, Jane Fountain was the moderator for a panel discussion about "Fighting for Democracy in a Digital Age".

Since 1961, the University of Massachusetts has presented the Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA) to instructors who demonstrate exemplary teaching at the highest institutional level. This campus-wide honor is the only student-initiated award on campus. Leah Wing, senior lecturer of legal studies, and Kelly giles, a graduate student of sociology, won from the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Kira Tait, a graduate student in the department of political science, has been awarded a Fulbright fellowship to conduct her dissertation field research in South Africa. The Fulbright program offers fellowships for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to study, conduct research, and/or teach English abroad.

Dean E. Robinson, political science, says white supremacists and other hate groups have gotten more visible under the administration of President Donald J. Trump. He also says social media has been used to rebrand an old version of the white supremacy movement. "Oftentimes, you'll see a surge in white nationalism during periods of widening economic inequality. Instead of blaming corporations for bad public policy, white nationalists and the alt-right will blame immigrants, blacks in the U.S. They will blame LGBT communities," he says. Professor Dean Robinson’s Public Policy Seminar in Health and Health Care Inequality in the United States Incorporates Perspectives from our Northern Neighbor

In late January twelve students from political science, biology, psychology, and other majors boarded a bus for Montreal, Quebec for a series of meetings and presentations on health and health care inequality in the Canadian context.

Jane Fountain, one of the world’s leaders in digital government research, was invited to participate in the 4th World Government Summit at the invitation of His Highness Lt General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of the United Arab Emirates. 

Jesse Rhodes and Julia Azari are now back on line with biweekly casts feature discussion of presidential politics informed by political science and American history. Also includes interviews with experts on various aspects of presidential politics, including campaigns and elections, domestic politics, foreign policy and policymaking.
