Eight UMass alumni gathered on campus March 29 to help prospective law students understand the reality of law school and legal careers as part of the annual Careers in Law speed networking event sponsored by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Commonwealth College, and the Pre-Law Advising Office.

Alumni participants included:

Henry Barr'68 is recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award. Mr. Barr is the senior partner of the law firm of Barr and Cole. He has served UMass Amherst as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, Center for Public Policy and Administration Advisory Board, and UMass Amherst Foundation, to name a few. He has also endowed a scholarship fund allowing urban youth from the West End House Boys and Girls Club of Allston, MA to attend UMass Amherst.  

In Beijing for her junior year, Wendy Simon-Pearson ’12 had eye-opening experiences typical of students abroad: visits to exotic landmarks, strange encounters on trains, language hurdles. But, as a participant in the UMass Amherst International Scholars Program, Simon-Pearson also made deep connections on her trip. “I was better prepared to have real conversations with Chinese people as a result of my studies,” she says, explaining how she learned to empathize with people who might accept living in an undemocratic system or agree with China’s one-child policy.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Peggy Browning Fund has awarded a 10-week summer fellowship to Samantha Schnoerr, a first year student at Michigan State University College of Law. Ms. Samantha Schnoerr will spend the fellowship working at UAW International Union in Detroit, MI. The application process is highly competitive, and the award was based on her outstanding qualifications.

32 leading governance experts argue in Science for fundamental reforms of global environmental governance and a “constitutional moment” in world politics

Reducing the risk of potential global environmental disaster requires a “constitutional moment” comparable in scale and importance to the reform of international governance that followed World War II, say 32 leading experts in an article in Science, published on 16 March.

From July 8-21, 2012 UMass Amherst is offering "Summer College" for highly motivated high school students in or about to enter their junior or senior year and who are ready to learn at a college level. 

The Department of Political Science is joining in this effort by offering the political science course "The Politics of Artistic Expression," taught by gradute student and artist Alix Olson.
