Since September, ten Political Science and Legal Studies majors have been working as research fellows through the Department’s Undergraduate Research Engagement Program (UREP).

The program, now in its third year, partners majors with faculty for one-on-one experience conducting research. It allows students to interact with faculty outside of the classroom, develop closer relationships with their professors, and learn skills important for graduate school and the workforce.

“UMass Amherst is a very special place for me,” says Judge William C. Ramsey ’97, “I was able to grow academically and personally at UMass, and I look back at my college experience with tremendous happiness.”

I chose to pursue an internship, specifically with the Department of State, for two reasons. The first was I needed some sort of experience to put on my resume relating to my studies and the field I hope to enter, international affairs. Secondly, I wanted to start to see the differences firsthand between working with an NGO, for the State Department, or for the United Nations. My internship in PRM was perfect for this because the Bureau works closely with various nongovernmental organizations and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees.

Ever since I was little I have dreamed of studying abroad. I was born in Venezuela but throughout my life, I’ve moved around quite a bit, so moving or a change of environment is not something scary to me, it’s rather quite exciting. When I lived in the Caribbean for a few years, I attended an International School where I fell inlove with cultures and diversity. Thus, when I came to America and found out about studying abroad, I couldn’t resist!

“I believe that much of the world's burdens today will fall upon the shoulders of the youth,” says Tanvir Faisal ’15.  Thus, millenials – his generation – must be prepared to lead and solve complex political problems.

Judy Holmes, Senior Lecturer and Undergraduate Program Director for Legal Studies, has been appointed Associate Director of the Writing Program for Junior Year Writing. 

As Associate Director, Professor Holmes review and approve new Junior Year Writing courses, conduct outreach to Junior Year Writing faculty to clarify course requirements and provide pedagogical support, and participate on the University Writing Committee.

“There is a cliché that you will not always remember what you learn while you were in college, but instead will remember the people you met,” says Daniel Halloran '13. After being selected to attend the Student Conference on US Affairs (SCUSA) at West Point this November, that cliché is more applicable than ever.

Amel Ahmed, Assistant Professor of Political Science, has published Democracy and the Politics of Electoral System Choice (2012 Cambridge University Press).
