It was a feat that nobody could remember ever happening in the history of the UMass Distinguished Teaching Awards: for the first time, the two winners of the award came from the same department...the Department of Political Science. Political Science PhD students Alix Olson and Ed Erikson were selected from a large pool of excellent graduate students on campus as this year's winners of the coveted Distinguished Teaching Award. It is the highest award bestowed for teaching on the UMass campus.

Five students were recognized on Monday at the annual Junior/Senior Legal Studies Luncheon. The students received awards for a combination of academic excellence and commitment to community service. Award winners include:

UMass Political Science Professor Ray La Raja recently contributed to the CATO Institute's Cato Unbound Forum focusing on Campaign Finance Reform.

As part of the U.S Embassy’s Study for United States Institutes (SUSI) program in Pakistan, six current and recent UMass Amherst political science students arrived in Islamabad on Monday for a week-long stay, during which they’ll attend an international youth conference, tour some of the region’s landmarks and speak to news outlets there about cross-cultural education and exchange. 

Assistant Professor Regine Spector will be spending this summer studying the social impacts of economic change in Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan. Spector received the grant along with Stephen Jones (Mt. Holyoke College) and Audrey Alstadt (History Department at UMass)to conduct a Five College Faculty-Student Summer Reseach Seminar.

The International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR) has awarded its annual Book Award (2013) to Online Dispute Resolution: Theory and Practice (The Hague:  Eleven International Publishing, 2012).

Stuart Shulman, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Vice President for Text Analytics at Vision Critical, will be an invited speaker at Citizen Voices, the Global Conference on Citizen Engagement for Enhanced Development Impact, at the World Bank on March 18.

According to organizers, "the conference will position the citizen engagement agenda as essential for effective development, move from knowledge to action, and establish concrete partnerships for scaling up at global and national levels."

“I am a TV news anchor at Fox 5 in Atlanta,” says Tom Haynes ’94. “And trust me, every bit of what I do in my job today was cultivated during my four years at UMass.”

Moving from an Intro to American Politics or Political Theory course to TV, may not seem like an obvious step for political science majors. But that’s exactly what happened for Haynes.
