Assistant Professor Amel Ahmed was a featured guest on WGBY's Connecting Point television show on January 22, 2013. The episode explored the current state of Egypt after passage of that country's new Constitution.

Amhed, who recently returned from Egypt, reports that the country was relatively and surprisingly calm immediately following the passage of the new constitution. This quietness was unexpected given the contentious discussions surrounding the Constitution prior to the vote. 

After bringing over 63 Pakistani students to the UMass Amherst campus for the past three summers as participants of the Pakistani Young Leaders program, political science professor Mike Hannahan traveled to Islamabad in January, where he oversaw a reunion of that program’s alumni, before embarking on a speaking tour of the country—a trip which coincided with President Obama’s second term inauguration and provided ample opportunity to discuss the U.S. government’s policies and practices. 

Peter Haas, Professor of Political Science, and Casey Stevens, PhD candidate in Political Science, presented their research at the Earth Systems Governance Conference in Tokyo, Japan January 28-31, 2013.  

Steve Darcy ’14 spent part of his winter break as a senatorial delegate to the Inaugural College Youth in Government National Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina.

Delegates to the assembly spent a week serving on model House of Representatives, Senates, Supreme Courts, and Federal Cabinets in order to better learn the ins and outs of government and leadership.
