Raymond J. La Raja, political science, says U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal of Springfield, who is in line to be the Democratic chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, is a pragmatist and well suited to the high-profile job. Neal is also one of two members who can request President Donald J. Trump’s tax returns. “Congressman Neal is a throwback to the days when members felt a loyalty to the institution of Congress,” La Raja says. “That means they cared about how it worked and the importance of relationships. That style puts him at odds with many in both parties but it is essential to have leaders who support Congress as a member, not a partisan.” La Raja says Neal may be criticized for his low-key style by other Democrats, but, “He has spine and his style is not the way the most passionate in his party would like to see him use his gavel.” (CNN [1], 11/7/18)
