The UMass Political Science Department is pleased to announce the recipients of this year's honors thesis awards: Dan Schulke, for his thesis, "The Socialist Government is Coming for Grandma (AKA The Federal Government Mandates that Private Insurers Provide Reimbursement for End-of-Life Discussions)" and Peter Toy, for his thesis, "Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula: A Threat to Saudi Arabian Oil and the United States' Economy."
Schulke's thesis examined the coverage given by ABC, Fox, and MSNBC to the health care reform debate, and, using content analysis of opinion new shows and public opinion research, explored the effect misinformation--such as the inclusion of death panels in the health care reform bill --may have on political knowledge. Schulke's thesis was supervised by Brenda Bushouse with Brian Schaffner as second reader.
Toy's thesis explored the relationship between terrorism and the US Economy. His thesis identified ways in which the US could "diminish ...[Al-Qaeda's] influence on Yemeni people and restrict its ability to conduct a large-scale attack on Saudi Arabian oil facilities." Toy's thesis was supervised by Laura Reed with Michael Klare (Hampshire College) as second reader.
