Bruce Desmarais, Assistant Professor of Political Science, has been named a Research Fellow at the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) for the academic year 2013-2014.

Professor Desmarais will be in residence at SAMSI during this time to participate in their Computational Methods in Social Sciences program

Lauren McCarthy, Assistant Professor of Legal Studies, has received a Kennan Institute Fellowship which will allow her to spend the Spring 2013 semester in residence at the Wilson Center in Washington DC. McCarthy will use this time to write a book about how Russian law enforcement agencies have responded to human trafficking.

If you are like most people, you will walk away from your undergraduate career with fond memories, great friends, new skills, and a few “words of wisdom” that will follow you throughout your career.

For Bart Gobeil ’94, the words of wisdom that have followed him after leaving UMass are “it’s all about perspective.”

“International social justice work is not an easy path,” says Michael Otto ’03, “but it is often very exciting and rewarding!”

Otto, who helped to found Tiny Toones, a non-profit organization which uses music to empower at-risk youth in Cambodia, says his Legal Studies background helped to make much of his social justice work possible.

“In much of the reading and coursework, I developed a passion for social justice that I do not think I would've found at many other universities,” he says.

A new report released by Jane Fountain, Professor of Political Science and Public Policy and Director of the National Center for Digital Government, and the IBM Center for the Business of Government offers practical advice for federal managers working to implement successful cross-ageny collaboration.

In part, the report responds to the Government Performance and Results Modernization Act of 2010 which required collaboration across federal agencies, but provided little guidance on how managers and agencies should work toward collaborative results.

“My research focuses on the politics of ethnic and racial diversity in Europe,” says Rahsaan Maxwell, assistant professor of political science, who is among the first group of Social Science Research Scholars affiliated with the Institute for Social Science Research in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Assistant Professor Amel Ahmed was a featured guest on WGBY's Connecting Point television show on January 22, 2013. The episode explored the current state of Egypt after passage of that country's new Constitution.

Amhed, who recently returned from Egypt, reports that the country was relatively and surprisingly calm immediately following the passage of the new constitution. This quietness was unexpected given the contentious discussions surrounding the Constitution prior to the vote.

After bringing over 63 Pakistani students to the UMass Amherst campus for the past three summers as participants of the Pakistani Young Leaders program, political science professor Mike Hannahan traveled to Islamabad in January, where he oversaw a reunion of that program’s alumni, before embarking on a speaking tour of the country—a trip which coincided with President Obama’s second term inauguration and provided ample opportunity to discuss the U.S. government’s policies and practices.

Sonia E. Alvarez, Leonard J. Horwitz Professor of Latin American Politics in the Department of Political Science and Director of the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies (CLACLS) at UMass Amherst, has received a Fulbright Lecturer/Research Award to support her research on feminism in Brazil.
