Angélica Bernal Appointed Director of the UMass SBS Academic Leadership Fellows Program

Dr. Bernal, as the Director of the newly renamed Academic Fellows Program (AFP), will support first generation and ALANA undergraduate students in SBS.  The program expresses our commitment to diversity and to helping improve students’ experiences at UMass so that they can better develop their academic and leadership potential.  The program was founded by Jackie Brousseau-Pereira to realize the vision of giving students experiential opportunities, building a community of success, and helping students work to create positive change at UMass and beyond.

Dr. Bernal, as the Director of the Academic Fellows Program (AFP), will support first generation and ALANA undergraduate students in the UYMass College of Social & Behavioral Sciences.  The program expresses the College's commitment to diversity and to helping improve students’ experiences at UMass so that they can better develop their academic and leadership potential.

"The goals for AFP will be to develop programs, specially tailored to first generation and ALANA students, to help them tackle the challenges they may face as they navigate college," says Bernal. "These programs will include Orientation programs, developing mentoring relationships with faculty, research and travel abroad programs, and building connections with first-gen and ALANA alumnae and other students on campus.  I am excited to build on the successes of the past, and develop the AFP Program to better meet our students’ needs.  In particular, I hope that our program will help students better reach their academic and professional goals and that students can fully thrive because they feel a strong sense of belonging and community here in the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences and at UMass."

Bernal has received many accolades during her time at UMass, including the CRF Family Research Scholarship, Lilly Fellowship, and grants to continue her research in radical populism and presidential constitutionalism.
