Rhodes receives Spencer Foundation Grant
Jesse Rhodes has received a grant from the Spencer Foundation to explore "How Education Accountability Shapes Citizens' Civic Attitudes and Behavior."
According to Rhodes, "Education accountability is pervasive, yet we know little about its civic consequences." This research project will fill a major gap in education policy research by developing and implementing a survey to examine citizens' attitudes about education accountability. More specifically, the research will explore how education accountability may shape civic agency, attitudes toward government, and civic participation. Findings will help to identify policies -- or characteristics of policies -- which effectively promote civic action.
Rhodes is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His major areas of scholarly interest are social and education policy, political parties, and the American presidency. He is currently writing a book (under contract with Cornell University Press) on the political development of American education policy since the 1980s. Complimenting this research, he is analyzing the effects of education standards, testing, and accountability policies on citizenship.
