Fulbright Student Awardees from the Department of Political Science

The UMass Amherst College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) played a big role in the university’s recent ranking as a “Top Producing Institution” for Fulbright Scholars for 2018-19. Among the seven faculty members from UMass awarded Fulbrights were Sociology’s David Cort and Millie Thayer, as well as Economics faculty member Arslan Razmi. SBS was also well-represented among the 14 alums and students who received Fulbrights. Those recipients included:

  • Michelle Chung, Sustainable Community Development ‘18; teaching English in Brazil
  • Arielle Gillette, English/Political Science ‘15; teaching English in Norway
  • Priscilla Mollard, an Anthropology graduate student; conducting bioarchaeology research in Romania
  • Kira Tait, a Political Science doctoral candidate; studying how language, culture and historical experience can hinder people in South Africa to assert their constitutional claims to social and economic goods and services, such as housing, health care, food and water.
  • Tenzin Thargay, Chinese/Political Science ‘18, researching how citizens’ political party affiliations impact their attitudes toward nuclear energy in Seoul, South Korea

Many of the student awardees were past recipients of SBS scholarships and awards, including: the Ansin Study Abroad Fellowship, the Feldman-Vorwerk Family Undergraduate Research Award, and the Dean’s Opportunity Award. Michelle Chung was also a participant in the Academic Fellows Program (AFP) and UMass Women into Leadership (UWiL).

Though not SBS majors, two Fulbright awardees from UMass -- Brooke Parziale, History ‘17, and Andrea Pulido, Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies ‘17, were also past SBS award recipients.
