Alasdair S. Roberts writes an essay in The Conversation

Alasdair S. Roberts, director of the School of Public Policy, writes an essay in The Conversation where he argues that the idea of American exceptionalism – that the country has a mission and character that makes it different from other nations – doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. He says because many people and policymakers believe in this idea, it serves as a complicating and influence-restricting element in foreign policy that weakens rather than strengthening U.S. standing in the world. He calls instead for “an attitude that acknowledges the commonalities, as well as the differences, in the American experience.” (The Conversation, 3/16/18)
