“Why Women Don’t Run for Office and What Happens When They Do.”

Jennifer L. Lawless is professor of government at American University, where she is also the Director of the Women & Politics Institute. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University in 2003 and her B.A. from Union College in 1997.

Kate Tooke Senior Associate, Sasaki, will present. Her passion for inspiring and empowering urban youth infuses her work as a landscape architect. She values engaging stakeholders in the design of their own urban public spaces through lively workshops, and is particularly interested in civic open spaces that support the play and learning of city children.

This interactive and participatory workshop introduces and explores the meaning of “civil disobedience” by illustrating how it has been used in history in different movements, for example the sit-ins in the Civil Rights. Examples from around in the world will be presented, with a focus on creativity and how to make it be more effective in the struggle for justice in the US.
